Penguin Random House
Creating a single platform in the UK for the world’s largest publisher.

This was an opportunity to become a more digital business, effecting change through multiple layers of the organisation but it wasn’t going to happen overnight. So a 3 phase implementation programme was designed to give PRH the new platform they urgently needed quickly, but with time to grow it and complete the digital and organisational transformation in later phases.

In phase 1, providing PRH with a quick and agile design and build capability was paramount. Cognifide’s accelerator, Zen Garden was used with Adobe Experience Manager to provide the required foundations and building blocks and a complex web build was achieved within twelve weeks.

This build delivered 5 new sites for the key brands Penguin, Puffin, Penguin Classics, Peter Rabbit and Ladybird. It also gave PRH a world-class CMS that meant they could upload and manage content and create multiple new sites to meet the pace of the industry.

In addition, phase 1 delivered faster search, email integration, affiliate based eCommerce and gave PRH analytics that would track and report customer engagement – key to the continuous improvement of the experience.

43 features delivered using only 4 custom-made components

fast and inexpensive production
This 3 phase implementation was designed to give PRH a brand new single platform at breakneck speed post-merger. Phase 1 delivered a single brand presence, the capability to create content and individual websites quickly and cost-effectively and measure customer engagement.

Phases 2 and 3 are designed to grow and, ultimately, transform; embedding and continuously improving new working practices and the organisational change required to service social media and new, growing online communities.

In short, it will create the landscape in which PRH can create greater awareness for their authors and sell directly to the consumer, enabling them to compete in an Amazon, E-reading world.
